Weak women in countries near China -- not only Vietnam but additionally North Korea, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar -- are now being pushed into partnerships within the land of the one-child policy, experts say.

"There is nothing in the home for these women, not even enough food to eat," said director Nguyen Tuong Long, referring to the dire poverty that is another key driver.The refuge in Lao Cai it has helped scores of female patients and opened in 2010.
Activists attempting to combat trafficking in Vietnam said police and experts consider the problem " seriously ".
May Na, from the Hmong ethnic community, was 13 when her dad forced her to marry a Chinese man and got her over the border.
"I could not accept it. They left me in the home and I climbed over the wall and went away. I was wandering for greater than a time, dropped, sleeping in the streets, crying," she said.
Ultimately, Na finished up in a police station, but since she spoke Chinese or Vietnamese -- just her local Hmong -- it took police monthly to determine what had happened and return her to Vietnam.
Now 16, Na -- the oldest of five kids -- is studying Vietnamese in the Lao Cai heart. She's chosen to not go back to her own family, although her uncle has been charged, she said.
It was an unpleasant experience for me," she said.
The federal government says it's released training courses in rural areas, near the edge, caution young girls to not trust outsiders.
Long, the center director, says he believes the amount of cases is falling.
In neighbouring Cambodia, there has been some prosecutions, but An Sam Ath of rights group Licadho said the scourge continues to be occurring, adding: "I am worried the problem can spread."
Anti-trafficking organizations in Vietnam say it's hard to warn girls of the risks when it's generally a relative or friend performing the deception.
They say there ought to be harsher penalties for traffickers -- including, for example, prosecutions at regional level to improve awareness in communities of possible punishments to deter people from trying
